Abstract

CHRISTIAN LEHMANN ABSTBACT Government (rection) is opposed to modification, both being subordinate to dependency. Government is defined äs a type of syntactic relation between constituents A and B where B depends on A and A is inherently relational. Personal agreement affixes on the governing term (regens) and case affixes on the governed term (rectum) are described äs the two principal means of expressing government relations, and their eyolution is sketched. Two syntactic relations, that of the subject and that of the genitive attribute, are analyzed in some detail with respect to the question of whether they fall under government. A hierarchy of the familiär type is proposed for case functions and is shown to correspond to a continuum between semantic and syntactic functions, äs well äs one between modification (adjunction) and government. Finally some suggestions for the Integration of the f indings into linguistic typology and universale research are made. 1. BEGRIFFLICHER RAHMEN 1.1.
