Chemistry T. Lindström: Chemical factors affecting the I behaviour off fibers J during papermaking. Nord. Pulp & Paper Res. J. 7 (1992): 4, 181-192. The role of ionic groups on cellulose fibers in papermaking is reviewed. Charged groups on fibers of both chemical and mechanical pulps have an impact on the swelling properties of the fibers and on the electro-chemical surface interactions with chemical additives. The major emphasis of the review is concentrated on the role of ionic groups, their ionic status, the pH and electrolytic content on papermaking. The origin of the charges and their effects on cell wall swelling is reviewed together with their effects on the rate of beating, wet pressing, sheet formation and strength development and drying. A series of tests were performed on two hardwood species in Nigeria to help determine their potential suitability for papermaking. Both species are clear and straight-boled and could be harvested at about 8 years. For Musanga and Delonix are: ash content 1.97 and 1.84%, spec, gravity 0.29 and 0.61, pulp yield 45.6 and 48.4%, mean fiber length 1.37 and 1.11 mm respectively. Treiber/1204
