3 (1975) 285 T. Perinat. Med. Letters to the editors -. Abnormal ovulation and DOWN's syndrome The etiology of the DOWN's syndrome has been the subject of many investigations. In spite of this it is not yet clear what is the cause of the nondisjunction which is responsable for the trisomy. All findings are in favour of an anomaly of the ovocyte. We have recently been able to observe a case of DOWN's syndrome with extraordinaryly precise details concerning a probable abnormal ovulation. The mother is 32 years old and has two normal children 3 and 6 years old respectivally. Every month she noted exactly the moment of ovulation on alternative sides. The intermenstrual period is 26 days in sommer and 28 days in the other year seasons. She uses the OGINO method of family planning. Five days after a normal ovulation on the right side she renewed her sexual activity. On this same day she feit an "abnormal" ovulation on the left side. 244 days after this she gave birth to a mongoloid child with a 47, XY + G karyotype. Could this 21 days prematurely released ovum be conected in any way with this karyotype? Dr. Francisco Asensi Dr. Felix Prieto Hospital Infantil "La Fe", Avda. Alferez Provisional, 21 Valencia--9/Spain Reply to Dr. Asensi and Dr. Prieto There is good evidence by experimental work with animals that overripeness of the ovum leads to malformations in the offspring, caused by chromosome abnormalities äs f. i. polyploidy or nondisjuction. The aging process of the gametes may Start pre or postovulatory arid there are good reasons to assume analogue disturbances of gametogenesis in man. Especially, cytogenetic analyses of spontaneous abortions in correlation with clinical data support the assumption that Bibliography [1] BLANDAU, R. J.: Aging Gametes -- their Biology and Pathology. Klinische Genetik Universität Ulm Prittwitzstr. 43 D-7900 Ulm/Germany overripeness of the ova plays a major part in the etiology of chromosomal abnormalities of the fetus. On the other hand,. nothing is known about nondisjunction caused by precocious ripening of the ovum; but one may speculate that any disturbance and/or imbalance of the endocrinium may alter the necessary synchronous sequence of gametogenesis and thus may lead to nondisjunction äs well, J.
