English as a lingua franca: Singapore

English as a lingua franca: Singapore When people discuss English as a global lingua franca, the implication is not so much how widely used the language is but rather what form of English should be used. This paper describes the role and features of a variety of English used in Singapore as one example of the developing new varieties of English that are emerging. The consequences of the spread of new varieties is then discussed in more general terms of standardization, identity, and what role the language classroom has to play in developing a global English. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png International Journal of the Sociology of Language de Gruyter

This paper describes the role and features of a variety of English used in Singapore as one example of the developing new varieties of English that are emerging. The consequences of the spread of new varieties is then discussed in more general terms of standardization, identity, and what role the language classroom has to play in developing a global English.
