Abstract

Structural Comparison, Diasystems, and Dialectology In bis interesting and stimulating article with the same title1, E. Pulgram makes some points about contemporary trends in dialectology, which are worth discussion. He has closely followed the recent developments of thought and methods in what is usually referred to äs the fieid of 'structural dialeetology'2. His attitude is one of accepting the results of this approach but, on the other band, of trying to match them against some fundamental principles in order to gain by this comparison a clearer insight and a surer foothold - of course, if necessary, not without a critical basis - for modern research in dialectology. Pulgram's starting point is the very critical and blunt statement that, in terms of the Saussurian theory of linguistics, "it does not make much sense to speak of partly similar Systems" (p. 66)3. Indeed, we do not see why, even if Systems could be defined - and analyzed - in such rigid terms äs are usually thought to be necessary in Saussurian linguistics, no partial similarity could be discovered between two structures. As a fact, de Saussure's formulations in this respect go certainly too far and there is probably no linguist
