Das zentrale Problem der theoretischen Philosophie Humes und ebenso der Kritik der reinen Vernunft ist für diese vergleichende Studie das Problem einer durch Notwendigkeit zu charakterisierenden Erkenntnis der "matters of fact". "Kant's critical philosophy tries to solve problems which belong to the field of matters of fact where truths are not formalized results" (58). Hume hatte zwischen unseren Einsichten im Bereich der "relations of ideas" und denen im Bereich der "matters of fact" einen grundsätzlichen Unterschied erkannt. Im Bereich der "relations of ideas" ist apriorische Erkenntnis "demonstrable and certain" (28). Für den Bereich der "matters of fact" verfügen wir über solche Einsicht durch analytische Urteile nicht; wir können für jede Tatsache ihr Gegenteil vorstellen. "All the judgements in the field of the relations of ideas are analytic in character ... the falsity of the opposite in the field of matters of fact cannot be shown along the same line we apply in judging the falsity of the judgments in the field of the relations of ideas" (29).
