Anticoagulant, Fibrinolytic and Antiaggregant Activity of Carrageenans and Alginic Acid Investigation of the effects of carrageenans and alginic acid on the coagulation and platelet aggregation systems was the aim of this study. The highest anticoagulant and fibrinolytic activities were found in carrageenan and Grateloupia dichotoma carrageenan. Antiplatelet activity of carrageenans showed that ADPinduced aggregation was inhibited slightly by t-carrageenan whereas - and -carrageenans were not effective. Ristocetin induced aggregation was inhibited by all the carrageenans tested. Alginic acid did not show any activity against coagulation, fibrinolytic and platelet aggregation systems. Introduction Anticoagulant activity has been investigated by many workers using such algal polysaccharides as, carrageenan (Eisner et al 1937, Eisner 1938, Houck et al. 1957, Schimpfer aL 1969, Schwartz and Kellermayer 1969), its various types (Hawkins and Leonard 1962, 1963, Anderson and Duncan 1965, Kindness et al. 1979 a) and fucoidin (Springer et al. 1957). Anticoagulant activity was demonstrated in a fraction of the extract of Corallina rubens L. (Güven et al. 1973/74) and Pterocladia capillacea (Gmel.) Born et Thur. (Güven et al. 1979) and also in extracts prepared from some species of Chlorophyta, Phaeqphyta and Rhödophyta (Deacon-Smith et al. 1985 a). Fibrinolytic activity was found in Corallina rubens L.
