Sarma and Chaudhary; An Investigation on the Cytology of Ulvafasciata Delile Botanica Marina Vol. XVIII, p. 179-181,1975 Y. S. R. K. Sarma and B. R. Chaudhary Department of Botany, Banaras Hindu University, Varana$i~221Q05(India) (Rec. 1. 9. 74) Gametophytic plantsof Ulvafasciata Delile, collected during spring tides from Visakhapatnam, were studicd cytologi cally. The chromosome number was determined to be ten, which is the first record for this species. Nuclear divisions preceding gamete formation in the gametophytic plants were all found to be mitotic. An invariable association beiween one long chromosome and nucleolus at late prophase, presumably representing N.O.-chromosome, is noteworthy. In spite of the profuse and common occurrence of Ulva on the Indian s well s on foreign coasts, very little work has been done on the karyology of the alga. Of the various species of this genus, only U. lactuca and U. linza have been cytologically investigated. The earlier contributions on U. lactuca and U. linza are those of Carter (1926), F yn (1929, 1934) and Sarma (1964) on the former and Levan and Levring (1942) on the latter. Carter studied only gametophytic plants from the American coast, while F yn worked out both gametophytic and sporophytic ones
