Abstract: This essay offers a reinterpretation of conventional readings of the connection between individualist and assimilationist arguments in Hunger of Memory , and a reconsideration of Rodriguez’s depiction of the ethnic self. Ultimately, Rodriguez’s individualist stance is a surface posture, underneath which one finds a more fundamental desire for community.
