A Re-evaluation of Some of the Documentary Evidence Concerning Louis the Duke of Orleans as a Patron of Tapestry Makers1 The patronage of tapestry makers by Louis, Duke of Orleans [1372-1407] has not been fully considered. Although detailed scholarship has been devoted to King Charles V and his brothers, the Dukes of Anjou, Berry and Burgundy, that of the King's sons, Charles V I and Louis of Orleans, has only been touched upon. 2 A study of even a selection of some of the primary sourcesrevealsthat Louis' patronage m a y have played a pivotal role for the tapestry ateliers in Paris. Dispersal and loss of the documentary evidence of the possessions of Louis the D u k e of Orleans has significantly hampered the assessment of his influence on the production of the various arts associated with the luxury goods market 3 Previous accounts of his patronage, the majority of which were undertaken in the nineteenth century, have concentrated on different collections of documents.
