Workshop Summary : User Interface Kurt C . Wallnau Paramax Systems Corporatio n 12010 Sunrise Vally Dr . Reston, VA 2209 1 1 Overvie w It is difficult to over-estimate the importance o f the human-computer interface (more commonly referred to as the "user interface", or "UI") to application software . An effective UI is crucial to a modern software development environment (SDE) not just because of the volume, heterogeneity and complexity o f SDE data which must be understood and managed b y software developers, but because an effective UI is a crucial component of gaining end-user acceptance o f SDE technology . In the past, developers of large-scal e SDE efforts have either neglected or oversimplified th e role of the UI, in effect conceding this important technology to the developers of individual computer-aide d software engineering (CASE) tools . It is not an exaggeration to suggest that the exploitation of bitmappe d displays by CASE vendors is a key element. in th e emergence of a robust CASE tool industry . Unfortunately, a dichotomy has emerged betwee n the developers of SDEs and the CASE tool industry [5] . One reflection of this dichotomy is
