With J Smile on 2D graphics The Beginning computer graphics occurred inJanumy 1993. An APL student of mine mentioned how obvious it was that APL would be great for doing computer graphics. Of course that had been clear to many people long before I realized it was true. Soon thereafter, I was using J for graphics both in my own research work and in serious teaching efforts. My earliest J experience is described in [4]. A couple years later I completed the book [5] that roughly followed my first special topics course in mathematical visualization and I have used the book for subsequent courses, independent studies, and for introducing research students toJ. In light of the book, I am "installed user base" with regard toJ graphics and am naturally concerned about changes. I originally used the isigraph feature in an early version of J2. This was to display and explore vector graphics in the book. Changes in the graphics system make the book out of date. The way 2D windows graphics is done in J4 involves fundamenud, revolutionary changes that have been done quietly. My aim in this column is to explore the changes and see how good
