WILL THE REAL SCENARI O PLEASE STAND UP ? ROBERT L . CAMPBEL L At every phase of its development , human-computer interaction has ha d its devices for disabling critical thinking . In recent years, terms like "hyper text" and "groupware" hav e sometimes functioned that way . Bu t such excesses have been countered b y critical and debunking literature (e .g . , Jones, 1987 ; Grudin, 1991) . I woul d like to draw attention to another suc h device : the term "scenario " . "Scenario" qualifies as a buzzwor d because it is extremely vague and ha s a myriad of uses. Indeed, it probabl y entered the HCI community from th e US government bureaucracy, especially the military, where it remains a popular term for any detailed alternative possibility. Another establishe d use is in business, in which a growt h scenario describes the anticipate d increase in demand for a produc t through the step-by-step fullfilment of a marketing plan . I think all uses of "scenario" in th e HCI world do have a common cor e meaning . They can be taken to refer t o representative instances
