Whither Object Orientation? What Is Object Orientation, Anyway? --by Walter G. Fit Luzern, Switzerland "'The important thing is to understand what you're doing, rather than to get the right answer" --Tom Lehrer, from .New Math aoM TIM~.TO Tr~., I read something somewhere sugges ring that APL is somehow a true object-oriented language, possibly due to the comparatively recent addition of APL language features such as GUI objects and namespaces. Although APL may arguably contain features considered objectoriented, APL itself is not an object-oriented language. At least not today. Nonetheless, object orientation is an important topic in software engineering today. Understanding something about object orientation is a helpful prerequisite to understanding where the software world is going. It also helps when using some of the newer facilities offered by both APL and modern operating systems such as Windows NT. F language already had in place that could do part or most of the job. In short s exploratory prototyping was best done by or under the tutelage of a professional. Casual programming was out. In order to do object-oriented programming, you don't need an object-oriented programxning language, or even a computer. Object orientation is about organization and design where
