Observatmns J User Conference 2000 --by cuff Department ofMathematics Lafayette College began w i t h a breakfast reception on the 35th floor of the Corporate Seminar Centre in downtown Toronto. While the weather outside was dreary, there were impressive views of Toronto under the mist. The climate inside was warm and cheery and the entire conference was smoothly organized. The presentations and discussions were exciring and thought provoking. Several of the presentations were in parallel sections so there was movement between sessions and great food seemed to constanfly appear. Eric Iverson set the tone of the conference with an extremely upbeat opening presentation to fifty-plus attendees. He noted that this was essentially the tenth anniversary of J and playfully asked whether a J User conference every five years was too often. He clarified corporate history:Ivcrson Software and Strand Softtwmrchave merged into Jsoftware and that this will help develop Jsoftware EricIversonopensthe conference brand recognition. He wondered why he always was picked to represent Jsoftware at presentationssuch as this.H e suggested thathe was picked since Roger and Chris wrote the random number generator.
