ABSTRACTS We need abstracts of members' work or members work-in-progresso RATHER ABBREVIATED PAPERS (RAP) The e d i t o r welcomes short papers to the RAP section that have a single point or two to make, an argument or counter-argument to put f o r t h , a response to a previous a r t i c l e to a i r , or any b r i e f remark, conjecture, or technique of i n t e r e s t to the LASH membership. I t is hoped that the RAP section w i l l be a depository for ideas and discoveries that have not had a f u l l paper erected around them, and that the membership w i l l avail i t s e l f of RAP to share thoughts that might otherwise not f i n d t h e i r way into print. E.g.: When is an Acronym More Than an Acronym. Acronyms are usually coined by s p e c i a l i s t s for use among themselves. Few achieve p o p u l a r i t y , and fewer s t i l l permanence in the general vocabulary. Computer Science has c e r t a i n l y produced i t s share of acronyms, and a number of these have gained popular acceptance (e.g. FORTRAN). The highest honor an acronym can achieve, in my opinion, is when i t resembles in i t s pronunciation a common word that conveys the intended meaning better than the words from which i t is drawn. I became aware of this p o s s i b i l i t y from a footnote in Brown's System/370 JCL book and i t seemed that i t might be fun to c o l l e c t these rare gems. Two of my favorites from Computer Science are SPOOLING for Simultaneous Peripheral Operation On-line and DEQUE for Double-Ended Queue. Do you know any you would care to share with me?
