Donn Parker of SRI, who is credited with being the "father of computer ethics" due to his interest during the 1960's with ethical concerns related to the newly emerging information technologies, defines computer ethics as the application of classical ethical principles to the use of computer technology [1]. Parker was an early practitioner to realize that, like many previous technologies, the computer had the potential for both beneficial use and harmful abuse. Walter Maner, a philosopher who teaches computer science at Bowling Green University, is credited with coining the actual term "computer ethics" in 1976, although he states that it is still too early to provide a formal definition for the term. He observes that when the computer is involved in moral problems, the problems tend to be exacerbated and new ones may even be created [1]. Deborah Johnson, a philosopher at Rensselaer Polytechnic
