VISFILES Visualization A Quickly Emerging Field I am honored by the challenge and responsibility that have been entrusted to me as the new VisFiles editor. Bill Hibbard has done a wonderful job over the past four years keeping us abreast of the fastchanging field of visualization. His columns have given us an accurate and balanced view of the field, which is a quality hard for anybody to match. In my first column, I will try to offer my view of the visualization field now and where it is (and should be) going. The timing is especially fitting since I just returned from the Visualization 2003 Conference held in Seattle, WA. The conference had another year of record submissions and attendance, which gives an indication of the continued and increasing interest in this field. I was overwhelmed by the amount of information and interaction available there. Kwan-Liu Ma Figure 1: An intent to visualize the topology of 3D vector field.
