User Interface Designand HCI Idenlifying lhe Training Heeds of Pradilioners Steve Howard Though many published curricula in HCI now exist, little has been done to map those curricula onto the needs of user inteF~ce designers. This paper reports such an attempt. A number ofpublished curricula in HCI were synthesised into a checklist of ~hings a users inte~ce designer might need to know: The checklist was then used as the basis of a series of structured interviews with practising user inte~7~ce designers. EssentialS, each designer was asked i f they 'needed to know about each item on the checklist in order to do theirjob?[ The results, interesting and sometimes surprising; suggest that whi[ht knowledge of some aspects ofpublished curricula (e.g. user intoT~ce technology and design techniques) is considered vital to the practice of inte~7~ce design, knowledge of other components (e.g. psychological~undations of the user) is requiredjar other than straigh~rward or practical reasons. The implications of this and other findings ~ r curricula, and education in general, is discussed, 1. Background and Introduction Whilst much is published in user interface design (UID), and HCI in general, as yet there have been few attempts to define the UID needs of the
