More APL applications have been developed by actuaries than by any other industry group. Perhaps this is due to the mathematical and symbolic orientation of APL. Actuaries eat symbols for breakfast, and mathematics for lunch. Or, maybe it's because APL has always been a societal outcast, a position with which the actuary can readily identify. T h e actuarial profession is said to be the least stressfid, not the most glamorous. Or maybe, just maybe, actuaries use APL more than other folks because they are a bit smarter than other folks. T h e y see APL as a tool that can save them time and effort. One line of APL code is equivalent to at least 10 lines in any other programming language (100 fines if it's COBOL). You can solve a problem with APL in a fraction of the time it takes to solve it in another language. Concise code, however, has its drawbacks.
