Stanley Dicks Technical Communication North Carolina State University Raleigh, NC 27695-8:1..05 Introduction In their 1990 article "What is Text Really?" DeRose, Durand, Mylonas, and Renear define text as an ordered hierarchy of content objects or OHCO. They contend that the essential parts of a document are the content objects and that other aspects of the text, such as its appearance, are superficial and transient rather than essential. After examining alternative models of text, they then proffer SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) as the best medium for supporting OHCO text. It is important to note that DeRose, Durand, Mylonas, and Renear published this article in 1990, years before the Word Wide Web exploded and millions of web users began to learn and use HTML,a subset of SGMLthat defines content objects but does not impose a hierarchy upon them and that also allows formatting instructions that violate good OHCO guidelines. Nonetheless, their article presages the growing emphasis placed on texts and their" structure with the advent of millions of Internet users.
