The approach taken in this research is to increase the quality of human-computer interaction through having the computer software match or emulate the cognitive representation employed by the user population. We believe that through interacting with users through the users' own cognitive representation of the information or knowledge, the users' perceptions of the interaction will be enhanced. Furthermore, if psychological theories of how users encode and represent knowledge are correct, the quality of information retrieved by users will increase, due to less inhibition, distortion, and reliance on constructive memory. The key is finding the representation employed by the user population. Once the scheme is known, it can be incorporated into the system and used to guide the interaction process.
