JasonGood During October 1994, an email discussion was held on the students.chi mailing list prompted by John Waterworth's review of Don Norman's recent book 'Things That Make Us Smart' [1] (referred to hereafter as TTMUS) that appeared in that month's issue of SIGCHI Bulletin [2]. Others wiser than me suggested that it would be interesting to summarise the discussion for other members of SIGCHI, but they didn't have time to do it at the moment - so I volunteered to enter the breech. This article appears so long after the discussion took place for two main reasons: first, the non-linear manner in which an email discussion takes place makes condensing one into a linear artide rather difficult. If and when the SIGCHI Bulletin becomes electronic and hypertext articles can be included, this may become easier!
