SIGDA newsletter, vol 17, number 3 The Seventeenth International Symposium Fault Tolerant Computing Najmi Jarwala on Fault Tolerant Computing Lab. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The Seventeenth International Symposium on Fault Tolerant Computing (FTCS17) was held on July 6-8, 1987 in Pittsburgh, PA and was hosted by the Carnegie Mellon University. The keynote address was given by Dr. Larry Druffel of CMU, who spoke on the problems in designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining large software systems, and Dr. Raj Reddy who spoke on the relationship between AI and faulttolerance. The conference had three main events: regular sessions where technical papers related to fault-tolerant hardware and software systems were presented, panel discussions, and a tour of the CMU campus. An interesting aspect of this years conference was the emphasis on reliable software systems. This growing interest was reflected in the technical sessions, which were divided almost equally in terms of hardware and software. The topics covered by the software sessions included distributed fault-tolerant algorithms, system diagnosis, and design and evaluation of fault-tolerant software. The hardware sessions covered traditional topics like testing, built-in self test, coding, fault-tolerant system architecture, and reconfigurable systems. There were two
