THE PRESENTATION OF COURSEWARE BY MICROCOMPUTER S USING A MODULAR CAI SYSTE M Charles van der Mas t Delft University of Technolog y 2600 AT DELFT, The Netherland s SUMMARY At the Delft University of Technology, Department of Informatics, a CA I project was initiated several years ago . The objective of the projec t was research concerning the implementation of CAI, using the most re cent technological developments . For such an enterprise a first stage was to enumerate the common aspect s of both courseware and of the different authorlanguages, including th e systems and methods used to practice CAI . This has led to the formulatio n of a new concept in the practical realization and organisation of CAI . This will be termed "Modular CAI" . An experimental CAI system was designe d following this concept to evaluate advantages against disadvantages . Th e presentation of courseware takes place on mini- or microcomputers whils t the development and the evaluation of it is supported by larger computers . FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF CAI . Our starting point was an analysis on the most important functions of a CAI system in operation . In CAI the
