The life sciences research community has long recognized the need for component-based software. Just as standard hardware interfaces make it possible to purchase the components of a hardware system from different vendors, component-based software allows system builders to choose components from a variety of vendors and assemble them to meet the unique needs of each researcher or project. Component-based software construction depends on the availability of components that perform the required functions and are accessed through standardized interfaces. The Life Sciences Research Domain Task Force of the Object Management Group was established as a forum for collaboratively specifying the requirements for software components for the life sciences research vertical domain and assisting the OMG in adopting technically excellent specifications for the standard interfaces that enable interoperation. In this paper, we describe the mission and status of this Task Force.
