The Nuts and Bolts of Animation Ed J. Cheetham Country Music Television MTV Networks The f o l l o w i n g a n i m a t i o n p r i n c i p l e s have evolved through many years of observation, evaluation and exploration.As early animators strove to refine their craft, there was a need to break down a highly complicated animation process into smaller identifiable categories.This refinement allowed for the development, discussion and exchange of ideas using a common language.This article offers a quick reference to these fundamental building blocks of animation as described in the book Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson (Abbeville Press, N e w York, 1981). Each principle is defined and a few hints or tips are given to help animators incorporate them into their next animation project.
