Suppose we give C O B O L (the whipping b o y o f the programming world) a productivity measure of 1. W h a t would A P L ' s measure he? T h a t is, if I un/t of work (programming task) can be done in, say, a month by a C O B O L programmer, h o w many units of w o r k can be done by an A P L p r o g r a m m e r in that same period of time? H o w many units o f w o r k can be done in BASIC, or in F O R T R A N , or in PL/1, and so on? T h e r e are several approaches you can take to answer this question.
