The EurolEMasters Project: A European Masters Degree in Information Engineering Alan F. Smeaton and Edie M. Rasmussen The European Commission funds a number of technically-based research and development programs such as ESPRIT and the Telematics Applications Programme (TAP). Information Engineering (IE) is one of the areas which receives part-funding for research and development through TAP. This sector essentially covers techniques to provide access to electronic information in all its forms based upon the notion of the information chain and including the areas of electronic publishing, information dissemination and information retrieval. Examples of some of the projects which receive funding under the Information Engineering program will give an indication of its scope. A project called "Multimedia Agent-Based Interactive Catalogues" (MAGICA) (IE-2069) is developing WWW-based and subsequently agent-based methods to enhance the retrieval, display and customization of multimedia catalogues. The "Twenty-One" project (IE-2108) is developing and validating a model for the distribution of multimedia documents to allow users to search electronic databases in a choice of European languages. The "Multimedia as Business Option for Local Newspapers" project (MBLN, IE-2081) seeks to identify new opportunities for local newspapers in the world of multimedia, electronic publishing, the Internet and the WWW.
