About a week ago, I had a nightmare that a DP manager was talking to me on the telephone telling me his problems: He had some old system, and some new system in the works; the analysts were using all of the latest structured techniques, and yet somehow everything in both maintenance and design was in chaos. The nightmarish part of the dream was that I was promising that I could write him some reports for upper management on his problems and that I could pin down his new design in another document for user approval; but he would have none of it. He had serious problems and he wanted them solved. All I could offer was documentation, and that just wasn't what he wanted. I felt so helpless, and yet I felt that I had the right solution!
