T h e A d a I s s u e s -- A S p e c i a l S e c t i o n Phil Brashear (Technical Editor o f A d a Letters) Electronic D a t a Systems Dayton, Ohio e-mail: phil.brashear @ acm.org T h e b u l k o f this issue o f Aria Letters is devoted to the presentation o f the A d a Issues (AIs) that h a v e b e e n a p p r o v e d b y the A R G and W G 9 . ( I f y o u aren't sure what is m e a n t b y AIs, A R G , or W G 9 , these terms are explained in the next two introductory articles.) T h e idea for this presentation c a m e up in 1anuary, a c c o m p a n i e d b y the question o f who would do the required formatting, etc. Perhaps foolishly, I volunteered m y services, with the results that you can find in the following pages. I take full responsibility for any differences between what you see here and what was actually accepted b y the language maintenance groups. (I h o p e there are none, but "the best-laid plans o f m i c e and m e n gang aft agley.") F o r the official versions, see the U R L given in the next paragraph. Here, w e are actually presenting a brief f o r m o f selected AIs. T h e complete set, in unedited form, is available on the W o r l d - W i d e W e b , at U R L http://sw-eng.faUs-church.va.us/AdalC/standards/95com/ada-issues. In this location, y o u can find which AIs h a v e b e e n created, discussed, a p p r o v e d by the A R G , and a p p r o v e d b y W G 9 . E a c h A I is there given in its entirety. As advised b y Erhard Ploedereder, Chair o f the A R G , we omitted AIs that simply reiterate what is in the language standard and A.Is that simply correct typographical errors. F o r each r e m a i n i n g A.I, we omitted the (often v e r y long) discussions that the A R G normally includes, leaving the question that g a v e rise to the AI, a s u m m a r y o f the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n or response to the question, and the c o m p l e t e r e c o m m e n d a t i o n or response. I f you are interested in the omitted material, see the W e b site_ T h e A I section has the following components, in the given order: ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ T h e A d a Issues - A Special Section (Phil Brashear) O v e r v i e w o f A d a S taudardization - J i m M o o r e A Reader's Guide to the A d a Issues - Erhard Ploedereder List o f A.Is b y A I N u m b e r and Title Cross-Reference: R e f e r e n c e M a n u a l Paragraph to A I N u m b e r The AIs This has b e e n a v e r y instructive task. E v e n when doing semi-mechanical formatting work, I can't help reading, and I found s o m e interesting tidbits. I hope that you will also find that reading the A.Is is fun and educational.
