The Ada Compiler Evaluation Syste m Phil Brashear CTA INCORPORATED brashear@ajpo .sei .cmu .edu 1 Introductio n The Ada Compiler Evaluation System (ACES) is the result of merging two national efforts aimed at assessing th e performance and usability of Ada implementations . The U .S . Department of Defense, through the Ada Join t Program Office (AJPO), funded the development of the Ada Compiler Evaluation Capability (ACEC) ; the U .K . Ministry of Defence funded the development of the Ada Evaluation System (AES) . AES evaluations were performed for fee, while the ACEC was made available to U .S . government agencies and defense contractors . Both tool sets provided performance tests and tools to analyze and report performance measurement results as well as providin g software and prescribing procedures for assessing non-performance aspects of implementations (such as symboli c debuggers and library management systems) . Each had certain areas in which it was superior to the other . By 1992, it had become clear to those involved in assessment of Ada systems that the international Ada communit y would benefit from a merger of the AES and ACEC . An agreement was reached between the
