The Acid-Base Physiology Program Richard W~ Stahlhut, M.D. Laboratory of Computer Science Massachusetts General Hospital Introduction The Acid-Base Physiology Program is a computer-based instruction aid to the learning of basic acid-base concepts. It was originally written by a Harvard medical student in the summer of 1984 to run on a VAX minicomputer. Since that time, I have been responsible for numerous content revisions, and later, the porting of this program to the Hewlett-Packard HP 150 microcomputer. Twenty-five graphics routines were needed to complete the conversion. This paper will discuss the basic format of the program and provide a general critique of its usefulness. The Program The Acid-Base ( A B ) Physiology program 18 run %mder the MGH teaching program driver (Dialog), which executes in the MUMPS language. The AB program, whose size is approximately 250 Kbytes, is actually data for the program driver which takes care of many of the details of teaching program writing such as screen clears, absolute and conditional frame transfers, support of various question types. In addition, Dialog provides a mechanism for imbedding MUMPS code and program calls when the existing structures are insufficient for the task at hand. The AB program itself
