Teaching Web Services Using .NET Platform Luís Assunção Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL-DEETC) Rua Conselheiro Emidio Navarro 1 1950-062 Lisboa Portugal tel: +351 218317212 António Luís Osório Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL-DEETC) Rua Conselheiro Emidio Navarro 1 1950-062 Lisboa Portugal tel: +351 218317218 lass@isel.ipl.pt ABSTRACT Teaching Web Services concepts, standards and technologies is a difficult and a long process if we have not chosen the right tools [1]. Nowadays there are several open source tools and platforms, but some of them are not suitable to teach. This poster describes our experience by using Microsoft .NET platform and Visual Studio .NET with Web Services Enhancements (WSE) to teach basic Web Services concepts and related technologies. lo@isel.ipl.pt 2. LECTURE ORGANIZATION The following table describes an overview of the 8 lecture sessions (4 weeks) with session of 3 hours, including laboratorial work. What is a Web Service? WSDL as a service interface description and SOAP as a way to invoke service operations. A first Web service: Develop (Edit) Service with Notepad; Deploy Service (copy file to Web Server virtual directory) and Test the Service with IE Browser. Concept of Web Service proxy. Generate proxies to well known Services from given URL ™s, e. g., Google and Amazon. Create simple and powerful client applications to access these services. Using Visual Studio .NET as a suitable IDE to develop, Deploy, Test and Debug Web Services and their application clients. Inside SOAP. Using trace feature on Visual Studio .NET with Web Services Enhancements (WSE) to understand the SOAP xml schema. Using SOAP Headers to exchange additional information between clients and services. Inside WSDL. Using wsdl.exe tool to generate WSDL files. Analyzing WSDL files to understand the WSDL xml schema. State management in Web Services. Session and Application objects from ASP.NET to easily implement state management. Web Services interoperability (WS-I) specifications. Using Web Services Enhancements (WSE) to easily understand and apply important specifications: WS-SECURITY and WSPOLICY. Categories and Subject Descriptors C.0 [Systems Application Architecture] Web Services General Terms Languages, Standardization, Experimentation. Keywords Web Services, Interface Description Language (WSDL), Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP); Web Services Interoperability (WS-I) 1. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and Web Services are mandatory subjects inside Computer Engineering curricula as an important paradigm to develop or to integrate applications [2]. At ISEL, we are teaching these subjects on Distributed Systems Architectures discipline by the 9º semester in a 10 semester ™s course. Our experience has demonstrated that teaching this subject without the right tools it was very difficult because the student ™s effort was mainly focused on tools details and installation/configuration issues. This poster describes a well succeeded experience on teaching Web Services with Microsoft .NET platform and Visual Studio .NET. In fact, these suitable tools have facilitated the Web Services teaching/learning process, from basic to advanced concepts like WS-I specifications. 3. CONCLUSIONS Despite commercial interests or controversial arguments on œuse or not to use Open Source tools we have concluded that Microsoft .NET technologies are well suitable to teach Web Services. The student ™s assessment have demonstrated good results what support the adopted strategy. 4.
