t cs, icac in t ically Thomas J. Bergin Department of Computer Science and Information Systems The American University Washington, D.C. 2016-8116 Ethics is a topic which is slowly gaining importance in computing circles . A few short years ago, there was little literature to support the teaching of ethics in computing courses . Indeed, some argued that such teaching was unnecessary . Unfortunately, the recent discovery of a number of illegal or unethical activities is causing educators to re-examine the need for ethics education in computer science and information systems curricula . Although ethical issues are probably touched on in many of our courses, the subject is directly addressed only in the Graduate Seminar in Information Systems. As the capstone course in the IS masters program, the Seminar attempts to bring together the theoretical and practical bases of the information systems field and provide students an opportunity to discuss contemporary issues in information systems and computer technology. Four weeks are devoted to ethics . The first session focuses on the foundations of ethical theory, and its relationship to the information systems profession . I try to provide students with a non-religious approach to ethical and moral behavior
