Survey of High Performance Image Generators RTG's Staff Rounds Up the Machines that Make Pictures in Real Time ur publication's name betrays a certain prejudice about what constitutes the heart and soul of simulation and virtual reality systems. Vision is our primary sense, and image generators are the machines that treat that sense. As displays improve and provide better resolution, that just puts more pressure on the image generation component to produce more pixels. This survey focuses on the highest performance, read most eapensive, image generators on the market. The visual environment is rich and complex. There are vanishingly few circumstances when even the best of today's image generators could fool an average person that the imagery was produced by a high resolution television camera, let alone the real world. By contrast, high fidelity sound is simple and inexpensive. Even motion simulation, while inconveniently space consuming and tough on the other simulation hardware, does not demand the cost or complexity of visual simulation. hnage generators are difficult to characterize, in part because they have many shortcomings with respect to the difficult problem of replicating the visual environments. Last year we published a lengthy two-part article that managed to
