The purpose of this book is stated i n the first paragraph of the Introduction : This sign language book is intended fo r use by : 1) deaf students preparing fo r careers in the computing field itself or i n fields which have a significant interfac e with computing ; 2) deaf employees currently in such careers ; 3) teachers and instructors, both for pre-employment education an d training and for similiar activities on th e job ; 4) interpreters, both for educationa l and employment environments ; and 5) manager s and other work associates of deaf persons . This last category not only represents th e largest number of potential users, but it i s also the group that will benefit most from the book ' s use . By facilitating communication with the people with whom they work , deaf employees are better able to interac t and to contribute, thus increasing the productivity of the departments in which the y work . The editor of this book, Steven L . Jamison, a consultant at IBM on the communication, education, and employment needs o f deaf persons, also hopes that, in documentin g over 600 computer terms in American Sig n Language those signs will thus become standardized . The book is the result of several month s of the collaborative efforts of over twent y computing professionals mostly deaf, fro m such institutions as Rochester Institute o f Technology, Gallaudet College, IBM, Xerox , Bell Labs, Rockwell International, an d Lawrence Livermore Labs . For each term i n the book, the group tried to reach a con - sensus on a single sign . However, for thos e terms for which there was no consensus, tw o alternative signs are illustrated . The majo r emphasis of this book in on terms relating t o computer programming and systems analysis , with signs for such terms as bit, hierarchy , installation, interactive, network, recursive, and switch .
