This month's column reports the status of three cooperative efforts between the Joint Technical C o m m i t t e e I (JTC I ) o f the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and several different outside organizations to transpose publicly available specifications into international standards. Within JTC I, the development work for each of the projects discussed here is being carried out by Subcommittee 24 (SC 24) whose area of work is computer graphics and image processing. The three standard projects discussed here are: ¢ ¢ ¢ Portable N e t w o r k Graphics (PNG) (ISO/IEC number not yet assigned). The Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML 97) (ISO/IEC DIS 14772-1). The Basic Image Interchange Format (BIIF) (ISO/IEC DIS 12087-5). Also, PNG can store gamma and chromaticity data for improved color matching on heterogeneous platforms. PNG is designed to be: ¢ ¢ Simple and portable: Developers should be ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ ¢ able to implement PNG easily. Legally unencumbered:As best known,
