Standardization, Innovation, and Microsoft The US Dartment of Justice's antitrust litigation against Microsoft defies common sense. It's the type of action that could only happen in Washington, a place committed to unconsciousness as a political philosophy. Whatever their feelings about Microsoft, computing professionals everywhere should recognize that an antitrust case has no public policy merit, based on fundamental and important tradeoffs between standardization and innovation that have been with us since the early days computing.
