EDUCATION FORUM Space Wars and Other Things This has been quite a summer. In a not so rare moment of profound inattention I let myself be hornswoggled 1 into taking on a job known as Interim Department Head, a job that at moments ranks right up there with cleaning road kill off a highway. Then at other times it can actually be rewarding, like the times when I say, "Do this," and it gets done. Space Wars The new department head position has certainly given me a fresh appreciation for theoretical computer science research--or actually most computer science research for that matter. First of all, it's a lot more fun to be doing that kind of stuff than it is to be fighting fires so that others can do it. Second, it doesn't take up much space. Why does space matter? Well, consider this paragraph from one of my first memos written as Interim Department Head: Space Wars has begun/ The rattling of sabers can be heard clear across campus. Whoops, since these are light sabers, make that a static buzz rather than a rattle (at least I've heard the buzz and it's mostly static). Don the black
