Social Implications of Computers: Ethical and Equity ~ssues Judith E. Jacobs Mathematics Department California State Polytechnic University Pomona, California 91768 The introduction of computers into any situation changes its social atmosphere. This happens whether the computers are brought into a workplace, a library, or a classroom. This change in social conditions can be positive or negative, depending upon the thought and work that preceeded the installation of the machines. For instance, there are many ethical and equity issues that should be thought through before introducing computers to any situation. The degree to which this is done, and the degree to which related policies are set will influence the nature of the resultant changes. During Robert Bork's confirmation hearing for a seat on the United States Supreme Court, a Washington, D.C. newspaper published a statement indicating that Judge Bork's family had rented 146 videotapes during the last year. The report indicated the types of tapes that were rented. This report was based on gaining access to the computer database that the video store maintained.
