SIGCSE Special Projects Grants Awarded by Doug Baldwin, SIGCSE Treasurer SIGCSE Speaker’s Fund Program by Amber Settle, SIGCSE Board SIGCSE received thirteen Special Projects grant proposals in August 2011. The Special Projects Committee was delighted to see such a high level of interest in the program, and would have liked to fund many of the projects. But there is are two more rounds of funding in this fiscal year, so the committee was limited to funding three projects at this time. The funded projects are... · Jeff Gray, University of Alabama, "Robotics Training for Rural and Urban Middle School Teachers," $2500 Scott Portnoff, Downtown Magnets High School, Los Angeles, "Teaching HS Computer Science as if the Rest of the World Existed," $2500 Ursula Wolz, Montclair State University, "Managing Student Deliverables in a Collaborative Online Game Design Course," $2500. Since 2005, the SIGCSE Speaker's Fund Program has funded presentations at incooperation conferences. Speakers from previous SIGCSE conferences, including the Symposium, ITiCSE, and ICER, can be invited by the organizers of non-ACM conferences that have in-cooperation status with SIGCSE. The fund pays for up to $1000 of travel support for the speakers and is intended to disseminate outstanding presentations from SIGCSE conferences to other venues. There have been three speakers funded since the start of 2011. · In April 2011, Jane Chu Prey presented her 2010 ITiCSE talk "Raising the Numbers of Women in Computing" at the 16th Annual Conference of the Northeast Region of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges (CCSCNE). · Martin C. Carlisle was funded to present his 2010 SIGCSE talk "What Should a College Classroom Look Like in a Digital Age?" at the Western Canadian Conference on Computing Education in May 2011. · In 2012 Edward Lazowska will be funded to present his 2008 SIGCSE talk "Computer Science: Past, Present, and Future" at CCSCNE. If you are organizing an in-cooperation conference and would like to bring a SIGCSE speaker, please consider applying. More information can be found on the SIGCSE web site: sigcse.org/programs/outreach/apply . The level of funding depends on the quality of proposals received and the availability of funds. · · Congratulations to all three of these proposers. Look for reports on their efforts at a SIGCSE conference or publication in the next year or so. In the meantime, another round of reviews will begin in November and the Committee encourages you to submit your project ideas. Applications must indicate the purpose of the project, how it will be conducted, the start date and duration of the project, reasons why the project is particularly timely, and its expected outcome.
