Journals ACM SIGIR Forum Volume 15 Issue 4

This book is one of the Information Sciences series published by John Wiley and is meant for "Users, Managers, and Technologists." The objective is to give a set of guidelines for implementing "complex" information systems. Complex information systems are defined as those "functioning within a multipurpose, multiuser environment - whether they are relatively simple data banks, more involved accounting or banking/credit systems, documentation systems, or middle or higher level management decision systems." Though the definition includes "management decision systems," the book focuses upon information storage and retrieval systems. Four of the five case studies presented are on the computerization of documentation systems. No mention has been made of simulation, modelling, optimization packages, etc., which are essential components of any information support system for managerial decision making, nor is the general problem of management information system design covered.
