Review of Structural Mechanics Computer Programs In June, University Press of Virginia published Strucutral Mechanics Computer Programs, Surveys, Assessments, and A v a i l a b i l i t y . The book contains most of the papers presented at the International Symposium on Structural Mechanics Computer Software which was held at the University of Maryland from 12 14 June. Some structural engineers, architects, and mathematicians have referred to this book as a bible. w i l l t e l l i f they are correct. Time Certainly many of the papers do contain descriptions of systems and programs. This paper For instance, there is a paper on GEVESYS, which is a machine-independeht software sharing system. Also, there are several papers like "Nonlinear Continua" by Van Risemann, Stricklin, and Haisler. presents an abstract of over forty computer programs and contains an appendix which l i s t s the source of 33 programs. A few other papers proceed in the same vein. Yet not a l l structural programs are similarly treated, or S t i l l , this book deserves commendation, even,.mentioned. Nor is a l l the information completely correct. i f only for i t s unique attempt to provide a single source of information. Many of the programs in this book are universal enough to appeal to a l l ~programmers. Plus there are , survey papers which should be beneficial to both the scientific and business computer communities, such as the one by Jackie Potts - a founder of SIGGRAPH - entitled "For the Computer Gourmet - Graphics." I t covers the history and present state-of-the-art of the entire computer graphics f i e l d . wisely, this book should provide a savings of both time and money. To those who use i t There are two indexes. The f i r s t is a subject index of structural mechanics computer programs without any page numbers. I f a desirable program is found, i t s page number must be located in the second index. This is an alphabetical l i s t i n g giving page numbers. Unfortunately, there is not t i t l e or author index. Hopefully this omission w i l l be corrected in future printings. There are ll05 pages. The book sells for $20 from the University Press of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia.
