A Review of APL2 in Depth --by Garth Foster Syracuse University POLIVKA'SCOLLABORATION on APL2 in Depth, Springer Verlag, 1995, has produced a very interesting addition to the APL literature. It certainly is not an introduction to APL2 and so does not compete with APL2 at a Glance by Brown, Polivka, and Pakin. At the same dme, it is not intended to provide definitive descriptions in one place, so save your reference language manual. What this book does is to provide a good learning exposition for those who know APL but are not up to speed on APL2. The book consists of six chapters each with exercises. Answers to the exercises may be found in an appendix, but with a system at hand there are wonderful learning opportunities by working through most, if not all, of the exercises and checking them at the computer. The first three chapters are grouped into: Functions and Arrays (Chapter 1) and Operators (Chapter 2) with Chapter 3 dealing with Elementary Data Structuring. In addition to covering the straightforward extensions to APL, chapter one explores topics such as pardal enclose and disclose and axis qualifiers, which are sometimes passed over at first introduction.
