Tracz IBM MS 0210 Federal Systems Division Owego, NY 13827 USA - This book is an update of a previously published collection of papers on microprogramming titled "Microprogramming" (Artech House-1977). The editors have gathered together a sizeable collection (38) of articles related t~ the foundations of microprogramming, its fundamental principles, as well as the "latest developments in the field of microprogramming". In organizing this second edition, the editors have added 14 new selections and deleted 8. The chapters have also been slightly modified, with the chapters on "Origins of Microprogramming" combined with "Early Microprogrammed Systems", and "Commercial Microprogrammed Systems" combined with "Microprogrammed Minicomputers". This has provided room for two new chapters on "Special-Purpose Microprogrammed Systems", and "Microprogram Development Tools". The new papers added were taken from IEEE Transactions on Computers (7), IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (2), ACM Computer Survey (I), and the 13th (i) and 14th (2) Annual Microprogramming Workshops.
