REPORTS FROM CSCW'92 SARA BLY The ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW'92) was held in Toronto, Canada, October 31 to November 4, 1992. Sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGOIS, the conference was focused on "sharing perspectives" especially in bringing together the multiple disciplines of the field. In the next several pages, you will find seven panel and workshop reports that are summaries of discussions not available as part of the conference proceedings. One important aspect of a conference is the presentation of provocative issues in the field. Three panel sessions at CSCW'92 put forth a range of perspectives on privacy, commercial products, and productivity. It's questionable whether or not collaborative technologies have been successful in the marketplace and, if so, why there seems to be no evidence that they contribute to more productive workplaces. Underlying this current technology development and use is the growing realization that we must clearly understand what role these technologies and their success plays in individual and group privacy protection. Three summaries capture the panel presentations and discussions of these issues. Workshops provide an opportunity for conference attendees to devote an entire day to a specific research focus and to work closely with a small group of associates discussing their specific research interests. CSCW'92 had a range of workshop topics covering subdisciplines from computer systems design to implementation techniques to ethnographic studies. The four reports provided here tackle aspects of design, privacy considerations, and collaborative learning. For a more complete listing of the events at the conference and a record of the papers presented in technical sessions, refer to the CSCW'92 Proceedings.
