Report on The First International Workshop on Implementing A u t o m a t a 1996 Susan H. Rodger, Duke University The First International Workshop on Implementing A u t o m a t a (WIA) was held at the University of Western Ontario, August 29-31, 1996. This workshop was an opportunity for people from the academic, research and industrial communities to come together to discuss symbolic manipulation environments designed for experimenting with automata. Several such examples including FLAP, FADELA, AMORE, FireLite, Automate, Turing's World, FinITE, INR, and Grail had been developed independently. As a result of such tools described above and developed by researchers scattered around the globe, the Conference Co-Chairs, Derick Wood and Darrell Raymond, were instrumental in founding this workshop to bring these people together. The Program C o m m i t t e e CoChairs for W I A 96 were Darrell Raymond and Sheng Yu, the program committee consisted of Franz Guenthner, Boleslaw Mikolajczak, Darrell Raymond, Susan Rodger, Kai Salomaa, Jorge Stolfi, Bruce Watson, Derick Wood, and Sheng Yu, and the conference coordinator was Caroline Sori. Twenty-six people from nine countries attended WIA 96. The organization of the workshop included a
