SIGCUE OUTLOOK Vol. 25 #3 July Report on ITiCSE '97: "Uppsala" Jim Hightower, SIGCUE Chair The s e c o n d a n n u a l c o n f e r e n c e o n Integrating T e c h n o l o g y into C o m p u t e r Science Education was h e l d in June in Uppsala, Sweden on the beautiful Mathematics a n d Information Technology campus of the University of Uppsala. I n t e r t w i n e d with the c o n f e r e n c e was a set of seven working groups. The groups worked on: 1. Designing laboratory materials for computing courses. 2. Using the WWW as the delivery mechanism for interactive, visualization-based instructional modules. 3. The Web a n d distance learning: What is appropriate a n d what is not. 4. Using IT to integrate societal and Ethical issues in the CS/IS Curriculum. 5. Computer m e d i a t e d communication in collaborative educational settings. 6. Harnessing technology for effective inter/intra-institutional collaboration. 7. Perspectives on innovations in the computing curriculum. Their reports will be distributed to SIGCUE members shortly. The c o n f e r e n c e itself b e g a n with an o p e n i n g r e c e p t i o n o n the e v e n i n g of Sunday June 1, 1997, a n d concluded on Wednesday evening June 4, 1997. Each day, the conference o p e n e d with a plenary p r e s e n t a t i o n by an i n v i t e d speaker. The s p e a k e r s w e r e H e r m a n n Maurer, w h o s p o k e a b o u t "The e m e r g e n c e of s o p h i s t i c a t e d d i s t r i b u t e d teaching a n d learning e n v i r o n m e n t s , " Dianne Martin who discussed "Empowering educators a n d parents: Content advisories for the Internet," a n d Joe T u r n e r who c o v e r e d the g e n e r a l issue of " T e c h n o l o g y in C o m p u t i n g Education: Yet a n o t h e r bandwagon?" Papers were p r e s e n t e d in two parallel tracks along with three panel[ p r e s e n t a t i o n s . There were nine long a n d 33 short papers. These r e p r e s e n t e d 15 different countries a n d were s e l e c t e d f r o m 125 submissions. Posters were p r e s e n t e d d u r i n g coffee breaks. These i n c l u d e d posters from working groups who also p r e s e n t e d their work during Monday a n d Wednesday receptions. There was a c o n f e r e n c e d i n n e r on Monday evening a n d lunches p r o v i d e d each day. The c o n f e r e n c e was just the right size to get to know the participants. Several new SIGCUE m e m b e r s were signed up. Plans are to hold ITiCSE '98 in Dublin during the third week of August. If the topics are of interest to you, plan to be there.
