This report gives an overview of the numerous research and technology development projects "fortec" has been involved. They all have as goal to improve the independence of persons with disabilities by technical solutions in the fields communication and orientation, safety aspects and education. Some European Union activities are described (within the Programmes "COPERNICUS", "COST" and "TIDE"). The main principles of fortec are integration versus segregation and to find technical solutions together with disabled persons and not just for them.
